Plant Care
- Light: Place Gasteria pillansii ‘Kensit’ in bright, indirect sunlight. It can tolerate partial shade but avoid exposing it to direct sunlight for extended periods, especially during the hottest part of the day.
- Watering: Water the plant moderately during the growing season (spring and summer), allowing the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings. Reduce watering in the winter months when growth slows down.
- Soil: Use a well-draining succulent or cactus potting mix. A mix designed for desert plants works well for Gasteria pillansii ‘Kensit’ to prevent root rot and promote healthy growth.
- Temperature: Keep the plant in average room temperatures ranging from 59-86°F (15-30°C). Protect it from temperatures below 50°F (10°C) as cold conditions can damage the leaves.
- Humidity: Gasteria pillansii ‘Kensit’ prefers moderate humidity levels. It can tolerate drier indoor air, but occasional misting or placing a humidity tray nearby can benefit the plant.
- Fertilization: Feed the plant with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength once a month during the growing season. Avoid fertilizing during the winter months when the plant is resting.
- Container: Choose a shallow pot with drainage holes to plant Gasteria pillansii ‘Kensit’. Ensure the container allows excess water to escape to prevent waterlogging.
- Pruning: Remove any yellow or dried leaves as needed to maintain the plant’s appearance. Trim leggy growth to encourage a compact, bushy form.
- Propagation: Gasteria pillansii ‘Kensit’ can be propagated easily by offsets (pups) that form around the base of the mother plant. Remove these offsets and plant them in a separate container with well-draining soil.
- Pests: Watch for common succulent pests such as mealybugs and spider mites. Treat infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
- Support: Gasteria pillansii ‘Kensit’ typically does not require support. Ensure the plant is stable in its container and avoid overcrowding to promote healthy growth.
