Plant Care
- Light: Christmas Cactus prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, especially during the hottest part of the day.
- Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist during the active growing season (spring and summer). Reduce watering in fall and winter, allowing the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings.
- Soil: Use a well-draining, slightly acidic soil mix designed for cacti and succulents.
- Temperature: Christmas Cactus prefers temperatures between 60-70°F (15-21°C) during the day and slightly cooler temperatures at night. Protect from drafts and sudden temperature fluctuations.
- Humidity: Maintain moderate humidity levels around the plant, especially during the winter months when indoor air tends to be dry. Mist the plant occasionally or use a humidity tray.
- Fertilization: Feed monthly with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half-strength during the growing season (spring and summer). Avoid fertilizing during fall and winter.
- Container: Choose a container with drainage holes to prevent waterlogging. Repot every 2-3 years in spring if the plant has outgrown its pot.
- Pruning: Remove spent flowers and prune leggy stems to encourage bushy growth after flowering.
- Propagation: Christmas Cactus can be propagated from stem cuttings. Allow cuttings to callous for a few hours before planting in a well-draining soil mix.
- Pests: Watch for common houseplant pests such as mealybugs or spider mites. Treat infestations promptly with insecticidal soap.
- Support: Christmas Cactus may benefit from staking or tying up stems to encourage a more upright growth habit.
