Plant Care

  • Light: String of Buttons thrives in bright, indirect light. It can tolerate some direct sunlight, especially morning sun, but avoid intense afternoon sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
  • Watering: Water the plant thoroughly but allow the soil to dry out between waterings. In the growing season (spring and summer), water more frequently, and reduce watering during the dormant period (fall and winter).
  • Soil: Use a well-draining succulent or cactus potting mix. You can also create a suitable mix by combining regular potting soil with perlite or coarse sand to improve drainage.
  • Temperature: String of Buttons prefers temperatures between 59-86°F (15-30°C) during the growing season. Protect it from temperatures below 50°F (10°C).
  • Humidity: This plant does well in average indoor humidity levels. Avoid placing it in excessively humid conditions, as this can promote fungal issues.
  • Fertilization: Feed the plant with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength during the growing season. Fertilize sparingly or not at all during the dormant period.
  • Container: Choose a pot with drainage holes to prevent water from accumulating around the roots. The pot should be slightly larger than the plant’s root ball to allow for growth.
  • Pruning: Trim off any dead or dried leaves to maintain the plant’s appearance and shape. You can also prune leggy growth to encourage a bushier form.
  • Propagation: Crassula perforata can be propagated from stem cuttings. Allow the cuttings to callus for a few days before placing them in a well-draining soil mix to root.
  • Pests: Keep an eye out for common succulent pests such as aphids, mealybugs, and spider mites. Treat infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
  • Support: String of Buttons generally does not require support. However, you can provide light support with stakes if the plant becomes top-heavy or leans excessively.
